Frequently asked questions

Restaurant software, cash registers, e-receipts, invoices and NTAK: which is which?

How restaurant software, online cash registers, e-receipts, invoices and NTAK differ in Hungary—check current NAV and NTAK pages for duties and dates.

Restaurant software, online and e-cash registers, e-receipts, invoices and NTAK do different jobs and are not interchangeable. Check the exact device, software, version and owner for each role in your venue.

If you are searching for e-cash register / e-pénztárgép compliance conclusions: check roles on this page first; do not read site feature copy as device certification or a mandatory applicability ruling.

In short: they can appear in the same sale, but they do different jobs. A product name does not by itself prove that every required role is covered.

This page only explains how the roles differ. It is not tax or legal advice and does not make a legal determination for an individual case. Duties, dates and thresholds for electronic cash registers, e-receipts and NTAK follow the current NAV / NTAK official pages—use the links at the end.

Restaurant software

Restaurant software is a business application. Orders, tables and similar day-to-day work may live here. Which functions, devices and integrations you actually get must be checked from that version’s documentation and a live test.

Online cash register

An online cash register (online pénztárgép) is a separately regulated cash-register category. It is not restaurant software, even when the two exchange data or run side by side.

E-cash register

An e-cash register (e-pénztárgép) is legally and technically a separate category from the online cash register. When comparing products or procedures, do not treat “online cash register” and “e-cash register” as interchangeable labels.

Who must use which kind of device, and any transition rules, are set out on the current NAV page on e-cash-register use and data reporting.

E-receipt

Here, e-receipt (e-nyugta) means the receipt concept tied to the e-cash-register path. It is not an invoice, not NTAK reporting, and not the restaurant software’s own order slip. How it relates to the generic term “elektronikus nyugta”, and the rules for issuing or paper copies, are defined on NAV: basic e-receipt information.

Invoice

An invoice (számla) is a separate document type. It is not an e-receipt and not an NTAK submission. Check the current NAV invoicing rules that apply to the individual business separately.

NTAK

NTAK is Hungary’s tourism data system. Whether you must register, whether you must submit data, which establishment types and revenue thresholds apply, which software may connect, and which message types exist—all follow the current NTAK hospitality page and your own business type. Any official software list is informational only; it is not a Catering POS certification or recommendation.

How do you separate the roles in a real sale?

For each sales path the restaurant uses, answer these questions separately:

Repeat the check for a normal payment; for split payment where you use it; and for correction, cancellation, refund, connection loss and end-of-day closing. A successful normal sale does not show how the other paths work.

What should an operator verify separately?

Does this page make a claim about Catering POS?

No. Any statement about Catering POS compliance, cash-register connectivity, invoicing or NTAK integration requires verified documentation for that product version and setup.

If you are deciding whether to replace the current setup, use the restaurant POS stay-or-switch checklist to test daily operations, migration, rollback, hardware, support and data exit.
