Checkout, payments and receipts

Guests want to split the bill, pay half in cash and half by card, and still get a receipt, and the till has to cope with all of it. This item covers checkout and receipts in the software: standard checkout, AA/split bills, staff use and invoicing; cash, card, mixed payment and member balance or points; plus change, rounding and receipt printing. The overview by category is on the home page; how to set up tax rates and payment methods is in the guides.

What is included

This item covers: standard checkout, AA splits, staff use and invoicing; cash, card, mixed payment, member balance and points; multiple currencies, change, rounding and receipt printing.

Checkout types

The back office maintains settlement currencies, exchange rates, payment methods, sale modes, sales tax rates and surcharges. Store orders can be looked up separately as standard, invoice, void or staff use, with amounts such as receivable and received.

Standard checkout, staff use and invoicing each have their own type in the back-office order filters and lists.

Split bills / mixed payment: included in this item; at checkout the till shows a panel with several payment methods.

Payment methods (by category)

Payment methods are set up in the back office by category: cash, card, mixed payment and so on.

Each payment method also has process switches, for example whether to print a receipt, send to fiscal or send to NTAK. These are back-office process settings.

Member stored value and points are kept in the member ledger, which you can view in the back office.

Change, rounding and multiple currencies

You set settlement currencies and exchange rates in the back office; at checkout the till lets you choose a currency and works out the change.

Receipt printing (and where fiscal tickets begin)

Whether a receipt prints is set on the payment method, and the till has statement and settlement screens. Having these settings switched on, or seeing these screens, does not mean a fiscal ticket has been formally issued or that NTAK reporting succeeded; formal sending and confirmations are covered in Fiscal and NTAK.

What to check before you choose

Good fit / less of a fit

Good fit: Dine-in restaurants that often split bills or take mixed payments; venues serving guests who pay in foreign currency and need multi-currency settlement and change.

Less of a fit: Stores that expect the software itself to come with card terminals; stores that need a dedicated acquiring integration not listed here.

How it fits into a store day

  1. Before opening, take a quick look at today's exchange-rate settings, especially on days with many foreign guests.
  2. Four guests want to pay separately and one pays cash in a foreign currency: split the bill first, take each payment, and change is rounded by your store's rules.
  3. A regular wants to pay half from stored value and the rest by card, so you take it as a mixed payment (whether member balance can be used at checkout depends on what your store has enabled).
  4. When you reconcile in the evening, filter out void and staff-use orders in the order list and check them on their own.
